The ‘Story’ of Snapchat Part 1.

With over 8 BILLION daily views and up to 100 million DAILY users, Snapchat has quickly become one of the hottest digital trends of 2016.

This innovative, real-time social media platform is the latest advancement in creative communications. The app allows users to send videos and pictures, both which self-destruct after a few seconds of viewing. It’s since evolved into a one-stop shop for all things social – messaging, extended video ‘stories’, lenses, geofilters, Snapchat has it all!

What’s more, the App started in the living room of two university students, Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy. Originally named Picaboo, the idea didn’t take off. Two months later and a rebrand, low and behold, Snapchat was born and is now reported to be worth $19 billion (or more). Not bad for an idea between two mates.

If you’re new to the Snapchat scene, or not too sure what all the fuss is about, not to worry! We are here to take you back to basics.


Snaps are a picture or video message shared with Snapchat friends in real-time. They make communication with friends spontaneous, unstructured and engaging! Snaps are only available for viewing for up to 10 seconds (or less depending on the time the user chooses), unless the viewer is quick and takes a screenshot.

Snapchat’s most groundbreaking shift was their addition of Snapchat Stories. After you’ve snapped your selfie, or a funny 10-second video of your cat, you’re given the choice to either send content directly to a friend as a Snap OR post it on your ‘Story’.

You can compile ‘Stories’ throughout the day to create your very own narrative, appearing in chronological order from beginning to end.

ALL of your Snapchat friends can view your Story, BUT only for 24 hours, then… gone!

Live Stories are a collection of videos and images from a bunch of people around the world, which are compiled by the Snapchat team. These most commonly occur when there is a large globally recognised event, such as a sporting game, fashion week, or music festival. Who needs to travel when you’ve got live footage streaming straight from Ocktoberfest into the palm of your hand!?

Add an extra bit of visual excitement to your Snap with filters. Select from a range of overlays; weather, time, colours or choose a filter specific to your location with Geofilters or Community Filters.

“Dynamic art for different places” – Geofilters are a creative way to share where you are through different filters. Each filter is unique to it’s location, adding an extra bit of energy to your Snap.

How can you access filters? Snap your pic and swipe sideways to select an overlay. You’ll be surprised at the amount of things that might be around you!

Tip for newbies: To access the fun, check your phone settings to make sure your location services and filters are enabled. AND, the fun doesn’t stop at one, you can stack filters.

If you’re a user of ANY form of social media, I would be shocked if you haven’t stumbled across the rainbow tongue or dogface before. Snap Lenses allow you to add special effects and sounds to your videos. How? Open your Snapchat camera (on selfie mode), and hold your thumb down over your face. Swipe left and right to enjoy!

Tip for newbies: You may need to open your mouth, or raise your eyebrows on cue to make things move.



When you’ve finished stalking your friends and following their movements of the last 24 hours, Snapchat let’s you check in with the latest news in the ‘Discover’ feed. ‘Discover’ has channels from top publishers, including Daily Mail, Buzzfeed, Vice, National Geographic and heaps more.

You have to be quick though – publishers refresh their news every 24 hours, keeping up with the temporary Snapchat trend.

From the stories page, swipe left to access the bank of ‘Discover’ publications. Simply tap on a bubble to open, swipe to read, and pull down to close!
